The 19th century kissing gate on the left had become
derelict and dangerous and we fully restored it when we joined the
Parish Path Partnership some years ago. Here was the official, and
appropriate, opening by the Councillors Colne.![]() |

| BUT: It became clear over the years that lots of people were being prevented from using the path because of the size of the gate. Obviously no one in any kind of wheelchair could use it, but neither could people with babies or youngsters in push-chairs. Some elderly people who needed a supporting arm could only use it with difficulty. | |
| SO: In 1999, working with permission from Hertfordshire County Council (the landowners of both the path itself by virtue of the Highways Act 1980 S262 and also of being the underlying landowner) and in cooperation with the Friends of Attenborough's Fields, who did most of the hard work, the other two gates were put in. | |
| The right hand gate, made by Centrewire Limited, is self closing for stockproofness and is easy for even quite big pushchairs and wheelchairs. But the very biggest powered wheelchairs can't use it. So we added the middle gate, also from Centrewire. This is secured with a captive RADAR keyed padlock, a key for which is available nationally to disabled people. In fact, we made this gate wider than was strictly necessary by extending the hinges and bolt. That was done to allow the Friends of Attenborough's Fields mini-tractor and trailer to pass through. | |
