The River Gade is a chalk stream habitat which apart from isolated examples in Yorkshire & Normandy, is unique to southern England.
We shall focus on the rich species diversity of this habitat and on the problems of pollution and over-exploitation.  There will be an opportunity to study the chalk stream and visit near the site of the water mill, torn down in 1952 and where kingfishers may still be found, as well as the nearby canal at the edge of Whippendell Woods, where Red Squirrels could still be seen in the 1940s.
