A pleasant evening stroll through the fields of Bushey. A short, informal, easy walk suitable for our less active members.
The solstice was only just on Thursday, the technical moment was a few minutes after midnight on Wednesday night.
We were very lucky with the weather, but the ground was still a bit wet in places. Took about an hour, with a short stop for 'Sun Chocolates' which magically appeared.

a few photos to come

Sunday 17th June – 10.40am (see below).  Two and a half miles
The River Ver via the Abbey Flyer.

Meeting point: Bushey Station to catch the 10:58 train (arrive Park Street 11.32).  If there are more than 10 of us we will buy a group ticket which will be considerably cheaper.  Please note: the station car park isn’t free on Sundays, there is a small, free car park opposite or park off Eastbury Road e.g. Kingsfield Road.
The post code for Sat. Navs. is WD19 4PN            Grid Ref  TQ11799532
Bring a picnic.
Leader: Yvonne Riley.
The Ver, a classic chalk stream, shallow with gravel beds and clear water, rises north of Redbourn and joins the Colne at Bricket Wood.  Chalk streams are one of Europe’s most threatened habitats supporting some of our most threatened plants and animals.

8 people came on the walk
The weather remained dry, sunny and warm and despite the rain of previous weeks there wasn’t too much mud underfoot.  A few sections of the route were fairly overgrown but either passable or alternatives were available.  A red kite made an appearance during the picnic stop.  We made it to St. Albans Abbey station in nice time for the train back to Watford.

Sunday 20th May 2010 - 11.00am.  1 ½ or 6 miles
A Woodland Interlude in Bedmond plus Pimlico. Two walks in one

Meeting point: Outside the Post office in Bedmond High Street.
The post code for Sat. Navs. is WD5 0QP            Grid Ref  TL09830366
Bring a picnic. Leader: David Bearfield.
This walk forms a figure-of-eight starting at Bedmond Post Office.  The first segment (which forms a short walk of 1½ miles) explores woods and lanes that the father of Nicholas Breakspeare, later to become Pope Adrian IV would have walked down to go to work at St Albans Abbey in the 12th century and where Dick Turpin would have ridden Black Bess on his way to rob stagecoaches.  The second section (just over 4
miles) takes in the hamlet of Pimlico and open farm land and has some connection with television.

Sunday 22nd April – 10.00am.   10 miles
The Ridgeway and Icknield Way – Part 3,   Watlington to Princes Risborough

Meeting Point: Bushey Country Club car park, High Street, Bushey.
Post code for Sat Navs is WD23 3DJ.             TQ13459508
We have a minibus – travel cost £5 per person.
Leader: Richard De Boise.
Distance measured on the day: 11.0 miles.
We stopped for our picnic on the lower slopes of Beacon Hill inside the Aston Rowant nature reserve, close to the M40. There were a few drops of rain; not enough to wet our sandwiches, just enough to whet our appetites!
When at the top of Lodge Hill, an air ambulance helicopter took-off with an unconscious casualty from another group of walkers.
Longer stop at “The Bird in Hand”, Princes Risborough, waiting for David while he collected the mini-bus from Wallington. Hail-storm when we transferred from pub to bus.

Points of Interest:

The White Mark (an 82-metre high narrow triangle cut into the chalk) on Watlington Hill, visible from Hill Road, Wallington.

The M40 cutting through the scarp edge of the Chilterns, as seen in “The Vicar of Dibley”.

The Aston Rowant Nature Reserve at Beacon Hill, our picnic site.

Between Beacon Hill and Kingston Hill, the path follows the line of a dismantled railway, part of the former Watlington and Princes Risborough Railway.

The disused chalk pits and quarry at Chinnor. The ones to the left of the path are largely dry, the ones to the right contain water and appear turquoise in colour.

The site of the former Chinnor cement works is being transformed into a housing estate.

Whiteleaf Cross (a 26-metre high by 15-metre wide cross surmounted on a triangle cut into the chalk) on the scarp edge above Whiteleaf, visible from Lodge Hill.

Many Red Kites (Milvus milvus), seen by all.

A Buzzard (Buteo buteo), a Lapwing (Vanellus vanellus), seen by some.

An Orange-tip (Anthocharis cardamines), a Small Tortoiseshell (Aglais urticae).

Carpets of Dog’s Mercury (Mercurialis perennis).

Patches of Cowslips (Primula veris), Primroses (Primula vulgaris), White Dead-nettle (Lamium album), Yellow-rattle (Rhinanthus minor).

Wild Flower Walk - Daffodils at Wall Hall

We walked from Aldenham Church to see the daffodils at Wall Hall.  It was such a lovely day that when Jennifer Nixon suggested a longer walk up to Munden everyone agreed.  During the walk some keen wildflower watchers spotted :
Snowdrops,  Lesser Celandine,  White Violets,  Daisies,  White Deadnettle,  Germander Speedwell, Daffodils,  Primroses,  Crocus and  Dandelions.

A walk taking in five of the less well known parks in Bushey.

We had 22 on the walk and Yvonne managed to account for all of them at the end.  A few planned to do only part of the walk, commendably they all remembered to tell us.  A picnic was taken in the Rose Garden.  There were a few surprises for people on the route as well.
